You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
The third commandment exhorts us to not take the Lord’s name in vain. While many take this literally, it’s unlikely that it’s meant so. After all, this is the only commandment for which we’re told that God will not forgive transgressors. So what can it mean?
For centuries the Rabbis have interpreted this as a warning not to present ourselves falsely, pretending to be good while doing evil. Dennis Prager gives an excellent explanation here:
This week, the New York Times came in for a great deal of criticism after it decided to host Sam Bankman-Fried at its DealBook Summit. Also on the roster was a host of questionable characters, including US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, BlackRock CEO Larry Fink, Ukraine’s President Zelensky, Mark Zuckerberg and more.
Each of these people believes they are doing good — or at least, they present as though they do. But the more we find out about their aims and business practices, the more it seems they are breaking that third commandment: passing themselves off as doing good, when in fact they are doing anything but.
